Why Does a Crypto Site Show a Blank Page After You Connect Your Wallet?
A blank page after you connect your wallet to a crypto site usually means the site has loaded a phishing front end that is waiting to drain your funds, or your wallet’s security features have blocked a malicious transaction and the site’s script cannot proceed. Do not interact with the page further - disconnect your wallet and close the tab.
How a Fake Site Uses a Blank Page
A phishing site that clones a legitimate DeFi protocol or exchange often works in two stages. First, it asks you to connect your wallet. Once connected, the site’s script checks whether your wallet holds assets it can steal. If your wallet is empty or protected by a blocklist, the site may show a blank page instead of the expected interface. This is not a technical glitch - it is a deliberate stall.
The attacker’s goal is to keep you on the page long enough to sign a malicious transaction. If the blank page appears, the script may be waiting for you to:
- Approve a token spend limit (unlimited approval)
- Sign a permit message that gives the attacker control of your tokens
- Confirm a wallet connection request that hijacks your session
Some phishing sites also use a blank page to hide a clipboard hijacker that replaces any crypto address you paste.
What to Do When You See a Blank Page After Connecting
Follow these steps in order. Do not skip any.
- Do not refresh the page. Refreshing may trigger a new connection request or a pre-signed transaction you did not intend.
- Disconnect your wallet immediately. Use your wallet’s interface (not the site) to revoke the connection. In MetaMask, go to Settings > Connected Sites and remove the site. In WalletConnect, open the session list and end the connection.
- Close the browser tab. Do not return to the site.
- Check your wallet for unauthorized activity. Open your wallet’s transaction history. Look for any pending approvals or outgoing transfers you did not make. If you see something suspicious, revoke token approvals using a block explorer or a dedicated revoke tool.
- Change your seed phrase if you entered it on the page. Some phishing sites do not need a transaction - they ask for your seed phrase directly. If you typed your seed phrase into any field, treat your wallet as compromised. Move funds to a new wallet immediately.
Why Your Wallet Might Show a Blank Page Instead of an Error
Legitimate crypto sites rarely show a blank page after wallet connection. If you see one, suspect one of these causes:
- Your wallet’s phishing detector blocked a malicious transaction. MetaMask and other wallets maintain a blocklist of known phishing domains. When you connect to a listed site, the wallet may prevent any transaction from being signed. The site’s script cannot continue and shows a blank page.
- The site’s front end is broken. A cloned site is often hastily built. The developer may have copied code that depends on a specific blockchain network or a particular token balance. If your wallet does not meet those conditions, the page fails to render.
- The site is waiting for you to switch networks. Some phishing sites require you to be on a specific chain (for example, Ethereum mainnet) to execute the scam. If you are on a testnet or a different L2, the page may stay blank until you switch.
- Your browser extension is blocking the script. Ad blockers or anti-phishing extensions can prevent the site’s JavaScript from loading. This is a good sign - it means your security tools are working.
How to Verify a Site Before You Connect
If you are unsure whether a site is legitimate, do not connect your wallet until you check these things:
- Check the URL carefully. Look for typos, extra characters, or a domain that does not match the official site. For example, “uniswap.exchange” is fake; the real site is “uniswap.org”.
- Look up the domain age. A phishing site is often registered within the last few days or weeks. Use a WHOIS lookup tool to see when the domain was created.
- Search for the site name plus “scam” or “phishing”. If others have reported it, you will find warnings.
- Test with a burner wallet. If you must interact with an unknown site, use a wallet that holds no funds and has no token approvals. Connect that wallet first. If you see a blank page, you have confirmed the site is malicious without risking real assets.
What a legitimate blank page might mean
There are rare cases where a legitimate site shows a blank page after connection, but they are almost always caused by a technical issue unrelated to phishing. These include:
- A browser cache conflict after a site update
- A wallet extension that is out of date
- A network outage on the blockchain the site uses
In those cases, the page will usually load after a refresh or after clearing your browser cache. But if the blank page appeared immediately after connecting your wallet, treat it as a red flag. Do not refresh. Disconnect first.
